Five Warning Signs of Nursing Home Neglect

These are the signs we see most often when a facility is failing its residents. Each of them is preventable when staff are doing their jobs.

Pressure sores (bedsores). Bedsores form when residents are left in the same position without being repositioned. They are not a normal consequence of aging.
Malnourishment. Sudden weight loss, fatigue, and skin that bruises easily can indicate that residents are not being fed or fed appropriately.
Dehydration. Dry lips, sunken eyes, and intermittent confusion are often signs that a resident is not receiving enough fluids.
Untreated infection. Urinary-tract infections and respiratory infections are common in nursing-home settings and progress quickly when staff fail to monitor and respond.
Falls. A pattern of falls, especially in a resident who was previously stable, usually points to inadequate supervision or staffing.
